Q&A with Colton Johnson

Q: How did you first get connected with Odyssey, and what drew you to work with us?A: I wanted as much experience and knowledge as I could obtain, and this role with Odyssey has more than delivered. It has allowed me to work hands-on with multiple different services to gain as much experience as I possibly can.

Q: Can you share a little about the projects you've worked on while with Odyssey?

A: I have worked on most of the IT-related infrastructure projects at the largest site in the world. Completely refreshing WAN, Distribution and Access Layers, WLAN, PBX infrastructure, edge routing, security devices, etc. Introducing enterprise SD-WAN to new standards, refreshing aging core and distribution layer switching hardware with thousands of feet of cross-connection to over 100 nodes, refreshing Access switches affecting 15,000+ access ports while removing unused connections—all completely in-house for massive cost savings on long-term operations and project costs. Supporting connectivity services to 5k+ business users and all IT and other connectivity services behind these connections.

Q: In your experience, what sets Odyssey apart from other companies or consulting firms?

A: From an IT Services & Operations perspective, Odyssey sets up customers for success with experienced IT professionals. Odyssey has delivered some of the widest range of experienced people I have ever worked with. Delivery in multi-faceted environments may not be as easy with other firms, who may not have understood initial challenges.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being part of the Odyssey team?

A: The amount of growth and wide range of experience I have earned through this opportunity. By adopting a learner's mindset, I have expanded on my own skill sets. This has allowed me to deliver through operational excellence and through a wonderfully balanced culture.

Q: Is there a memorable moment, challenge, or success story from your time with us that you'd like to share?

A: Recently, a new advanced AV solution project was in the commissioning process, being a first of its kind in the operating environment, which included a large number of connectivity requirements. After going above and beyond to do massive amounts of prework related to the required connectivity items, it was found that the project team was completely stuck troubleshooting massive amounts of dropped multicast streams spanning multiple devices. Project resources were troubleshooting for a long time, including AV architects, AV Designers, Network Design Engineers, and AV Enterprise consultants, with the AV commissioning company awaiting and incurring costly fees. A large troubleshooting session was started to involve manufacturers, starting back at square one. Within 10 minutes of first discovery, Odyssey contacts (me) immediately identified the issue as an L2/COS/QOS problem, as configured policies were dropping a massive amount of the streaming traffic. By identifying this, the project team was able to deliver the project on time and immediately finish to finally commission the room, saving more money on large troubleshooting sessions. Afterwards, these policies were accepted into the Design Guides for the AV/Network spaces, ensuring these policies will be configured correctly for future delivery.

Q: What advice would you give to a new consultant starting out with Odyssey?

A: Really focus on what your strengths are, but also keep up with always learning about the things you may not be an expert at. When I started, I really identified what the strengths of my experienced colleagues were and always asked questions about things I did not fully understand.

Manager Shoutout: Recognizing Colton’s Expertise

Colton’s impact doesn’t go unnoticed, especially by those who work closely with him. We recently received this note of appreciation from a manager on-site, praising Colton’s quick thinking and technical expertise:

“I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude for Colton's sharp eyes and quick troubleshooting skills in resolving issues. Colton is always available and works collaboratively to ensure successful outcomes.”

In a recent high-stakes AV project—the first NVX production solution deployed globally at the energy company—Colton’s expertise proved pivotal. After multiple team members spent days troubleshooting why video streams wouldn’t pass through properly, Colton was brought in. Within minutes, he identified that the issue stemmed from inconsistent port-level policies between network environments. His insight led to a resolution that allowed the devices to stream video successfully, avoiding further delays and saving the team significant troubleshooting time and costs.
