Virtual interviews are no longer the exception-they’re the norm. Over the years, our tenured recruiters at Odyssey Information Services have guided thousands of candidates through virtual interview processes across industries and roles. While interviewing from home can feel more comfortable than walking into an office, it comes with its own set of expectations.

From our perspective on the recruiting side of the table, preparation makes a noticeable difference. The candidates who stand out are rarely the most rehearsed, they’re the ones who show up confident, professional, and ready to engage. Here’s what we consistently recommend to help you make a strong first impression in a virtual interview.

Test Your Technology Ahead of Time

One of the most common reasons interviews get off track is avoidable technical issues. A frozen screen, poor audio, or last-minute software updates can create unnecessary stress and distract from your qualifications.

We always recommend logging in at least 5-10 minutes early to confirm your camera, microphone, and internet connection are working properly. Make sure platforms like Microsoft Teams or Zoom are fully updated well before interview day. Using a headset with a built-in microphone can also significantly improve audio quality and minimize background noise.

A smooth technical start sets a professional tone and allows the conversation to focus on what really matters, your experience and skills.

Be Intentional About Your Lighting and Background

In a virtual setting, your on-screen presence is the first impression. A clean, distraction-free background and good lighting go a long way in helping interviewers connect with you.

Whenever possible, position yourself facing natural light rather than having it behind you. Avoid sitting in front of cluttered spaces, and choose a neutral, tidy area. If that’s not an option, tools like background blur in Microsoft Teams can help create a more polished appearance.

These small details signal preparedness and professionalism-qualities hiring managers notice immediately.

Dress Like You Would for an In-Person Interview

One of the biggest misconceptions about virtual interviews is that they’re more casual. While you may be at home, the expectations remain the same.

We advise candidates to dress professionally from head to toe. Even if the camera only shows part of your outfit, dressing the part helps you mentally shift into interview mode and boosts confidence. Hiring managers can tell when candidates take the interview seriously-and appearance plays a role in that perception.

Know Who You’re Meeting With

Virtual interviews can feel less personal, which makes preparation even more important. Before your interview, take time to research the interviewer(s) and the company.

LinkedIn and the company website are great places to start. Understanding who you’re speaking with, their role, and the organization’s mission helps create more natural conversation and builds rapport. From our experience, candidates who do this tend to feel more comfortable and engaged during the interview.

Prepare Thoughtful Questions

Interviews are a two-way conversation. Asking informed, thoughtful questions demonstrates genuine interest and strong communication skills-especially important in a virtual environment.

Review the job description, explore the company’s website, and jot down questions in advance. It’s perfectly fine to have notes nearby. Many strong candidates also allow room for new questions to come up organically during the discussion.

Engagement stands out, and your questions often leave a lasting impression.

Final Advice from Our Recruiters

Be yourself. Confidence, authenticity, and professionalism translate just as clearly through a screen as they do in person. Make eye contact with the camera, smile, and take a moment before answering questions if needed.

Virtual interviews may look different, but the goal is the same: connection. With the right preparation, you can showcase your strengths and move forward with confidence.

From all of us at Odyssey, we wish you the best of luck in your next virtual interview.
