You made it through the treacherous screening process and now it’s time for your true first impression—the job interview. Here are three of my favorite tips to help you walk into your interview feeling confident and leave behind an unforgettable impression.
1. Research the person leading the interview.
As part of your interview prep, be sure to research the interviewer. It’s going to make you feel more confident in the interview if you know how long that person has worked for the company, some of the titles he or she has held at the company and just a little bit more about them. Not only will you impress the interviewer, this information can be a great conversation starter, especially if you have things in common.
2. Make eye contact.
Everyone gets nervous in an interview setting. And when that happens, we tend to forget to make eye contact. However, when you make eye contact while talking, you’re going to appear more confident and the interviewer will know you’re engaged in the conversation.
3. Ask the right questions.
We all know it’s important to ask questions at the end of an interview, but you don’t want to just ask any questions. You want to ask the right questions.
My favorite question to have interviewers ask is: “Do you have any concerns about me being the best fit for this position?”
This is a great way for you to see where you stand with the hiring manager, especially if they have any concerns about your skills or your previous experience, and to clear that up before you leave the interview.
