Thirty-five years ago the world was experiencing a recession, an energy crisis and high inflation. Population had reached 4 billion, and the feminist and environmental movements were rising. During this time, computers were getting faster, their mystique growing. The early seventies brought microprocessors, Ethernet and the TCP/IP protocol. A new market was emerging, online transaction processing – and a new company was born to serve this market. Tandem Computers was incorporated on November 29th, 1974 with the central idea of providing a computer that wouldn’t go down, a computer with no single point of failure.
